I have this craving for some sinful local food this weekend. To satisfy my craving and avoid over indulgence, I took a balance approach. Had sinful local food for lunch and salad for dinner and 8km brisk walk in the morning.
Fried Carrot Cake (Chye Thow Kway)
On Saturday, I had lunch at my favourite hawker centre, Zion Riverside Food Centre. I had a plate of Chye Thow Kway (aka Fried Carrot Cake) from Lau Goh. Lau Goh is the name of the original store owner who is no longer around. Lau Goh left his legacy to his third son, Peter Goh, who is hearing impaired. Peter could read your lips but it is better to order your food by pointing at the pictures and the words that he placed on the table top at his store to avoid any miscommunication. So do not get upset when he is cooking at the back of the store and does not respond to you as he really could not hear you.
As I could not decide between white (fried with light soy sauce) and black (fried with dark soy sauce) Chye Thow Kway, I went for the mixed Chye Thow Kway at $5. 🙂
Curry Chicken Noodle
On Sunday, I satisfied my next craving which is the Curry Chicken Noodle at Hong Lim Food Centre, at Chinatown. There are two famous stalls that sell curry chicken noodles at Hong Lim Food Centre. One is Heng Kee Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee on level 1 and another is Ah Heng Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee at level 2. The one that I frequent is Heng Kee on level 1 but it is closed on Sunday. We walked up to level 2 and there was a long queue. Though the queue was long, it was moving swiftly.
After less than 15 minutes of waiting, we have our piping hot curry chicken bee hoon noodles at $4 per bowl. This is the first time I ate from this store. I prefer the store on level 1 as I find the chicken they serve more tender though my friend prefers this store. If you are around Chinatown, do check out these two stores.
Feeling great that my craving has been satisfied. 🙂 For more on local food in Singapore, check out my past postings here.
